Allen Road Elementary Students Celebrate Community Connections:
Visitors to Allen Road Elementary School now have a special view of their school community thanks to a school-wide collaborative art project led by Megan Paye. Megan is an art teacher at both Allen Road Elementary and Gillette Road Middle School. As an art teacher, she recently worked with Allen Road students around the concept of being a part of a community. The students gave examples of different communities they belong to (sports teams, North Syracuse and churches) and how it feels to be part of those communities.

Smith Road Elementary School Kicks-Off the Year with Character Education Assembly:
Students and staff at Smith Road Elementary School were excited to kick off their Character Education campaign this past week during the school’s first full assembly in almost two years! To bring students together safely, an outdoor gathering was help on Wednesday, Sept. 29, which turned out to be a beautiful, sunny, fall day.
Five 4 th grade student leaders directed the assembly along with Principal Lyndsey Maloney and Music Teacher Rebecca Hall. The student leaders, who were chosen for that role because they had all demonstrated positive character traits, had the job of teaching other students about those traits:

Smith Road Students Participate in #WhatLiftsYou Global Campaign:
Elementary art students at Smith Road Elementary School recently learned about the work of illustrator and artist Kelsey Montague. Montague is the founder of the #WhatLiftsYou global campaign and an artist known for creating large scale, interactive street murals around the world in which people step into the work and become a living work of art.
After learning about the atist, students in Carolyn Mowers' art classes took time to create their own works of art to participate in the campaign as a school community. Gillette Road Middle School Teacher Teams-up With Former Student For Tandem Race:
Eileen Gleason, a 6 th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, has taught students at Gillette Road Middle School for almost three decades. During her time at the middle school, she has worked with hundreds of students both in her classroom and through her work with student council and other extra-curricular activities.
Every day, Gleason finds value in her work with young people but has a special appreciation when she makes a true connection with a student. Two years ago, Ms. Gleason worked with a special needs student, Enrique Gonzalez, who has been in a wheelchair for his entire life. After sharing a story about running, a special hobby of hers, Ms. Gleason and Enrique connected about the experience of being a runner.

CNS Kicks-Off Suicide Prevention Month Activities:
On Friday, September 10, in honor of “World Suicide Prevention Day,” students and staff at Cicero-North Syracuse High School kicked off a month-long campaign to raise awareness about the topic. The mental health team at CNS used the day to bring attention to the issue by engaging students in activities to educate and promote suicide prevention as well as overall mental wellness.
Kristen Stanton is the District-wide School-Based Mental Health and Wellness Coordinator for the North Syracuse Central School District. As such, she is instrumental in the District’s mental wellness promotion and she helped plan events at CNS for their World Suicide Prevention Day.

September is Suicide Prevention Month and the North Syracuse Central School District is committed to bringing attention to the issue and providing resources for those in need. Throughout the month, students at Cicero-North Syracuse High School are participating in prevention activities including the "Got 5 Challenge."
The Got5 Challenge brings attention to a FREE Crisis Text Line – an anonymous, text-based support network that’s available 24/7. The Crisis Text Line is available for anyone who just needs someone to “listen” and understand. On Friday, November 5, 2021, in honor of Veteran’s Day, the North Syracuse Central School District will honor a group of inductees to its Military Honor Roll. The Honor Roll was established in 2012 to recognize former District students that have gone on to military service.
In order for the honor roll to be as complete as possible when it is unveiled, we are asking for the community’s help. If you are a graduate of the District or have attended Cicero-North Syracuse High School and have gone on to military service for at least one year, please contact the District to be included.

During the 2021-2022 school year, all students will be issued a District Chromebook for academic purposes. Parents and guardians must sign a Chromebook loan agreement prior to students being issued the device.

CNS Graduate Madison King Awarded CNY STEM Scholarship:
Cicero-North Syracuse High School Class of 2021 graduate Madison King has been named a CNY STEM Scholar in the Partners for Education & Business, Inc. (PEB) 2021 CNY STEM Scholarship Program. Madison is one of only three students in Central New York to receive this recognition and a $20,000 scholarship from SRC.
Madison, ranked 4 th in the CNS Class of 2021, will attend the University of Rochester in the fall to major in the field of computer science.

Marching Band Performs at Malta House:
The Cicero-North Syracuse High School marching band, under the Direction of Karen Seamans, recently performed at the Malta House Senior Living Apartment Building in North Syracuse. Students wanted to give back to the community, especially the high school seniors who have not had many opportunities to get out in the past year. The band performed songs such as Apache , Don’t Stop Belivin’ , Happy and Sweet Caroline .
Karen Calkins, President of the Northstars Band Parents group, attended the event and shared photos. She said that the students had a great time performing and the residents were so pleased! Smith Road Elementary School Celebrates Giving:
The Character Education Team at Smith Road Elementary School (J. Bennett, K. DeSpirito, L. Marzullo, J. McCurdy, S. Garrett, K. Norton, M. Harrington) helped knock down hunger through their school’s "Domino Day" collection event. Students and staff collected an astounding two THOUSAND boxes of cereal and raised nearly $300 in donations for the North Syracuse Christian Church Food Pantry.
Before the boxes were donated to the pantry, the school celebrated their accomplishment by lining them up like dominoes through the school’s hallway. Smith Road Elementary School Principal, Lyndsey Maloney then led the students in a countdown and their mascot, Smitty the Shark, started a domino demolition with cheers from the students.

Burmese Refugees Among CNS Class of 2021:
For three Cicero-North Syracuse High School Class of 2021 students, the steps they take when they cross the graduation stage this June will be the final ones in a journey of refuge and realization. CNS Seniors Dimi Mu, Lydia Par and Van Bik are all Burmese refugees whose families came to the United States in search of better lives when they were just children. The three young people are also the first ones in their respective families planning their next journeys as college students.
The three students are from the Chin State in Myanmar where members of ethnic communities have often been mistreated by the government. Transportation for 2021-2022 School Year:
The North Syracuse Central School District provides busing for students based on their home address. Students requiring transportation to and/or from an alternate location within the District must have a Change of Transportation form on file. The form must be updated annually.
Change of Transportation Forms should be completed and returned to the Transportation Office by June 18 . Transportation arrangements not updated before the deadline will revert back to students' home address for pick up and drop off.
