NSCSD Once Again Celebrates Students In-Person at First Public Presentation in More Than a Year NSCSD Once Again Celebrates Students In-Person at First Public Presentation in More Than a Year: As part of their regular Board of Education meeting on May 17, 2021, the North Syracuse Central School District held its first public student recognition presentation in more than a year. The occasion proudly honored the 17 Cicero-North Syracuse High School students who met the rigorous requirements necessary to earn Seals of Biliteracy on their 2021 high school diplomas.   The New York State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English. North Syracuse Early Education Program celebrates community’s support for inclusive playground North Syracuse Early Education Program celebrates community’s support for inclusive playground: On Saturday, May 15, the North Syracuse Early Education Program (NSEEP) celebrated a vision realized with a grand opening ceremony for the school’s new inclusive playground. The celebration was the result of many years of fundraising, hard work and community support. The North Syracuse Early Education Program serves disabled and non-disabled students in an inclusive setting. Many disabled students receive special therapies through multi-disciplinary teams. The addition of an inclusive playground, with features such as wide wheelchair-accessible ramps, a poured smooth rubber surface and a communication board, allows more students to participate in learning opportunities through play. NSCSD Voters Approve District's Budget Proposal: North Syracuse Central School District voters have agreed to the District’s proposed 2021-2022 school year budget with a 72 percent approval.  A total of 1,488 votes were cast, with the final tally being 1,063 yes votes and 407 no votes on the $180,258,175 proposal. A bus proposition for $1,709,850 also passed with 1,076 yes votes and 392 no votes for a 73 percent approval. Additionally, the Salina Free Library proposition for $480,181 passed with 41 yes votes and 14 no votes. Voters elected the following three candidates to the North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education for (three-year) terms beginning July 1, 2021:  Paul Farfaglia (1,077 votes) Mark Thorne (1,036 votes) Beth Kramer, Ed.D. W3B CNS Vocal Jazz Ensemble Returns to the Stage W3B CNS Vocal Jazz Ensemble Returns to the Stage: On Sunday, May 16, student members of the W3B CNS Vocal Jazz Ensemble, made a return to the stage (after a hiatus of 15 months due to COVID) at a beautiful outdoor concert. The group was invited to perform at Immanuel Lutheran Church for a celebration of their Pastor’s retirement. In the past, the Vocal Jazz has performed many times for their senior citizen luncheon and was honored to be asked to return. It was a beautiful day for an outdoor concert! The group will be travelling to North Syracuse Junior High School to perform on Friday, May 21 and will also be participating in the CNY Interscholastic Jazz Festival on May 23 at 2:30 p.m. and giving a concert at Town of Clay Park on Wetzel Road on June 10 at 6:00 with the CNS ...

In a typical school year, the 27 school nurses (both LPNs and RNs) working in the North Syracuse Central School District’s public and parochial schools are quite busy attending to the health needs of their schools’ populations. If you haven’t already, please take time to consider what these employees have done for others this past year and offer your thanks! Shannon Owens is a bus dispatcher with the NSCSD Transportation Department and has worked in the transportation industry for the past 20 years. Shannon is one of only four dispatchers managing the District’s fleet of 145 vehicles and 175 drivers and attendants. While Shannon was individually nominated for Shining Star recognition, she and the District’s Transportation Director, Matthew Conti, want to credit the TEAM at transportation for keeping things rolling smoothly this year.  ...

Mask Requirement Continues at Athletic Events Mask Requirement Continues at Athletic Events: The following message from the North Syracuse Central School District Athletic Department is being shared with NSCSD Families and Staff: The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued updated guidance on April 27, specific to mask wearing recommendations for fully vaccinated individuals. While the guidance allows for some lessened requirements, the CDC still recommends that fully vaccinated people wear a mask when attending sporting events or in crowded spaces. The North Syracuse Central School District continues to require spectators at NSCSD events to wear masks. Spectators refusing to wear masks will not be given access to athletic events. Our goal as an athletic department has not changed. We must remain diligent in our efforts to lower the county-wide transmission rate. ...

Nursing and health office staff have worked tirelessly to care for sick students and staff, assist with contact tracing, administer COVID testing within buildings and for student athletes, and serve as a resource for students staff and families. Stories Come to Life During Cicero Elementary School's PARP Celebration Stories Come to Life During Cicero Elementary School's PARP Celebration: Students at Cicero Elementary School were among the thousands of elementary students across the country to celebrate PARP, or “Pick a Reading Partner” throughout the month of March. PARP is a New York State PTA (Parent Teacher Association) program that asks a partner (parent, grandparent, babysitter, older sibling, cousin, friend, etc.) to read with a child for at least 20 minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. Each year, schools throughout the NSCSD come up with creative themes for PARP month and devise fun ways to participate. District Will Reallocate Food Service Resources with Expanded In-Person Instruction District Will Reallocate Food Service Resources with Expanded In-Person Instruction: As students in the North Syracuse Central School District return to school for additional in-person instruction on a staggered schedule this month, the District will reallocate its food service resources to meet the changing needs. Families of students continuing to learn remotely will still be able to pick up meals in the morning or afternoon (each Monday through Wednesday) depending on their preference. Additionally, families can take meals for up to five days at a time. Roxboro Road Middle School Students and Staff Support St. Baldrick's Roxboro Road Middle School Students and Staff Support St. Baldrick's: As part of their Kindness Month Campaign, students and staff at Roxboro Road Middle School used their final school day of the month to celebrate with a shave! Throughout the month, Team RRMS raised money for St. Baldrick's and the fight against pediatric cancer. More than $2,000 was raised and the students and staff marked the accomplishment by shaving their heads in front of the school's morning announcement cameras. March is Kindness Month at Roxboro Road Middle School March is Kindness Month at Roxboro Road Middle School: Students and staff at Roxboro Road Middle School are doing their best to turn the Month of March into a big celebration of kindness! Melissa Potratz, a 7th grade teacher at Rox recently reached out and shared the school's " Kindness Calendar " on behalf of herself, Chris Chirinos and the school's Student Council and Positivity Project. Throughout the month, the school community is invited to take part in the many themed days such as the Ice Cream Social (distance) which is pictured, Lucky Charm and Rainbow Days. District Asking K-4 Families to Respond to Return to In-Person Learning Survey by March 12 District Asking K-4 Families to Respond to Return to In-Person Learning Survey by March 12: On Thursday, March 4, 2021 our County Executive and County Commissioner of Health announced new guidance for schools.  These guidelines include reducing social distancing from 6 feet to 3 feet, polycarbonate "plexiglass" barriers for all students and a continued mask mandate for students and staff.  The reduction of social distancing guidelines will likely allow the NSCSD to expand our "in-person" instruction for K-4 students.  We are working through the many logistics and challenges associated with returning more students to our schools.  These include staffing adjustments, rewriting master schedules, increased furniture needs, rerouting bus runs, updating safety protocols, preparing for increased student drop-off, etc.  We anticipate being ...
