NYS DOT issues traffic alert for Cicero; closure will impact NSCSD students and families:
On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) issued a traffic alert regarding the ongoing I-81 Viaduct Project . The alert announced road closures and suggested detour routes that will directly impact traffic in the Cicero area. Beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24, South Bay Road will be closed to southbound traffic between East Pine Grove Road and along the South Bay Road bridge. The DOT expects the closure to and detours to remain in place through Oct. of 2025.

CNS seniors can apply for Dollars for Scholars scholarships through March 31:
The North Syracuse Dollars for Scholars online application process for Cicero-North Syracuse High School seniors is now open. If you know a senior who plans to further their education, please encourage them to apply.
To apply for a scholarship, students must first register and then login to complete an application . Students needing help completing an application are encouraged to visit the school’s Career Center. More information about applying is available on the CNS High School website by clicking on the Career Center link.

Gillette Road Middle School will be presenting Annie Jr. on March 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. and March 16 at 2 p.m.. Voters to elect three board of education members; petitions available:
On May 20, 2025 the North Syracuse Central School District voters will choose three district residents to serve on the NSCSD Board of Education. Board members each serve a three-year term.
Residents must collect thirty seven (37) signatures from qualified school district voters to be placed on the ballot. Petitions will be available for pickup on Monday, Feb.3, 2025 at the NSCSD District Office 5355 West Taft Rd. North Syracuse and must be filed by 5 p.m. April 21st at the district office. Fine Arts Department announces world premiere of exclusive composition by renowned composer Larry Clark:
The North Syracuse Central School District’s Fine Arts Department is thrilled to announce that esteemed composer Larry Clark has written an exclusive piece for the district’s 7-12 District-Wide Band Concert. Changes to Google Services for Students:
The North Syracuse Central School District Technology Department has been informed by the New York State Education Department that we are required to make changes to student access for certain Google Additional Services. This directive comes from the Chief Privacy Officer at NYSED to ensure compliance with Ed Law 2-d, as Google is not able to sign a Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) for these additional services.
What’s Changing?
Google Core Services (Gmail, Classroom, Drive, Docs, Slides, Forms, Calendar, Sheets, etc.) are NOT affected. Students and teachers can continue using these services as they currently do.

Congratulations to the student-musicians from North Syracuse Junior High School and Roxboro Road Middle School who were selected to participate in the 2025 Onondaga County Junior High All-County Festival. The festival was held at Nottingham High School on January 24 and 25.

For the past 70+ years, high school students from across Central New York have been recognized in the Central New York Scholastic Art Awards. CNS Optimist Club seeking entries for Oratorical Contest:
The Optimist Club of Cicero-North Syracuse is sponsoring an Oratorical Contest with a top award of a $2,500 college scholarship. Students under the age of 19 who live within the boundaries of the North Syracuse Central School District are eligible to participate. This year’s contest theme is “How Optimism Has Guided me Through Trying Times,” and will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Jerome F. Melvin Administrative Office Building (5355 West Taft Rd., N. Syracuse, NY).
Students wishing to participate in the Feb. 25 contest should email Mr. Crabtree by Feb. 18 with their intent to participate and the entry form. Contestants will be asked to speak on the official topic for four to five minutes with timing beginning at the first spoken word.

District teams battle and earn top honors in State esports championships:
CNS High School esports teams dominate NYS esports league championship
Two Cicero-North Syracuse (CNS) High School esports teams recently emerged victorious at the New York State esports League Championships on Sunday, Dec. 15. CNS High School Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe teams brought home championship trophies, marking a memorable achievement for the district’s e-sports program.
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team, comprised of Zach Strait, Landon DiGregorio and Dante Bennett, pulled off an incredible upset against Syracuse City Schools to advance to the finals. In a thrilling championship match, they faced and ultimately triumphed over our own North Syracuse Junior High School team and earned the title.

Lakeshore Road Elementary School renovation project faces delays, may push reopening date:
The renovation of Lakeshore Road Elementary School may take longer than originally planned. The North Syracuse Central School District’s initial goal was to complete the work and reopen the school before the start of the 2025-26 school year.
“It appears increasingly likely that construction at Lakeshore will not be completed in time for the start of the next school year. While the team is working diligently to adhere to the original timeline, large-scale construction projects sometimes encounter unforeseen delays,” said Interim Superintendent Michael Schiedo. “In this case, the project received approval from the New York State Education Department several months later than expected. NSCSD students advance to Regional Spelling Bee:
On Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, thirty students from Roxboro Road Middle School, Gillette Road Middle and North Syracuse Junior High School gathered at the North Syracuse Central School District Office to compete in a districtwide spelling bee.
The talented youth from grades five through eight were challenged with a variety of words ranging from simple spellings such as “gothic” and “phantom” to more difficult spellings such as “perpetuate” and “immunization.” All students came to this competition after completing written and oral exams within their schools.

CNS supports New Americans through various efforts:
In November, Cicero-North Syracuse (CNS) High School students and staff came together for a meaningful cause: supporting newly arrived students in our community. CNS French teacher Jessica Keane and Human Rights Club Advisor Jackie Hayman partnered to organize a school supply drive for InterFaith Works, an organization dedicated to helping refugees and immigrants transition successfully to life in Central New York.
Over the past year, Jessica and Jackie have collaborated on various initiatives with InterFaith Works, including donation drives and volunteer projects. Winter weather alerts:
When there is inclement or forecasted inclement weather, the decision to close school, delay opening or dismiss early is based on travel conditions and weather predictions to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
When schools are closed because of weather conditions or other emergencies, announcements are sent on ParentSquare and posted on the district website. Other emergency conditions, such as impending storms, may require students to be dismissed before regular school closing time. Early closing/dismissal announcements are also sent through ParentSquare and posted on the district website.
While emergency closings are also shared with local media, district communications are the first and best source of information.

We have been informed by the Cicero Police Department of an investigation they are conducting regarding allegations of one incident of inappropriate physical force between a teacher and a student at Cicero Elementary School. The school’s resource officer, who is also a Cicero Police Department officer, was immediately involved and is working closely with law enforcement, district administration, and the student’s family to address the situation.
