CNS Optimist Club seeking entries for Oratorical Contest:
The Optimist Club of Cicero-North Syracuse is sponsoring an Oratorical Contest with a top award of a $2,500 college scholarship. Students under the age of 19 who live within the boundaries of the North Syracuse Central School District are eligible to participate. This year’s contest theme is “How Optimism Has Guided me Through Trying Times,” and will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Jerome F. Melvin Administrative Office Building (5355 West Taft Rd., N. Syracuse, NY).
Students wishing to participate in the Feb. 25 contest should email Mr. Crabtree by Feb. 18 with their intent to participate and the entry form. Contestants will be asked to speak on the official topic for four to five minutes with timing beginning at the first spoken word.

UPK lottery registration deadline extended:
Thank you for your interest in the North Syracuse Central School District Universal PreK Program. The UPK program is free to children who live in the district and are four years old on or before Dec. 1. Due to capacity constraints, the NSCSD utilizes a random lottery system for all applicants. Acceptance into the program is not on a first-come, first-served basis. Lottery applications were accepted from Jan. 6, 2025 through Feb. 12, 2025. Families that completed registration within the lottery period for the 25-26 school year will be notified of acceptance/placement in early April.
NSCSD continues to accept registrations for its Universal PreKindergarten (UPK) program for the 2025-26 school year, but registrations received after February 12 will be added to a waitlist and ...

CNS High School esports teams dominate NYS esports league championship
Two Cicero-North Syracuse (CNS) High School esports teams recently emerged victorious at the New York State esports League Championships on Sunday, Dec. 15. CNS High School Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe teams brought home championship trophies, marking a memorable achievement for the district’s e-sports program.
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team, comprised of Zach Strait, Landon DiGregorio and Dante Bennett, pulled off an incredible upset against Syracuse City Schools to advance to the finals. In a thrilling championship match, they faced and ultimately triumphed over our own North Syracuse Junior High School team and earned the title.

Lakeshore Road Elementary School renovation project faces delays, may push reopening date:
The renovation of Lakeshore Road Elementary School may take longer than originally planned. The North Syracuse Central School District’s initial goal was to complete the work and reopen the school before the start of the 2025-26 school year.
“It appears increasingly likely that construction at Lakeshore will not be completed in time for the start of the next school year. While the team is working diligently to adhere to the original timeline, large-scale construction projects sometimes encounter unforeseen delays,” said Interim Superintendent Michael Schiedo. “In this case, the project received approval from the New York State Education Department several months later than expected. NSCSD students advance to Regional Spelling Bee:
On Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, thirty students from Roxboro Road Middle School, Gillette Road Middle and North Syracuse Junior High School gathered at the North Syracuse Central School District Office to compete in a districtwide spelling bee.
The talented youth from grades five through eight were challenged with a variety of words ranging from simple spellings such as “gothic” and “phantom” to more difficult spellings such as “perpetuate” and “immunization.” All students came to this competition after completing written and oral exams within their schools.

CNS supports New Americans through various efforts:
In November, Cicero-North Syracuse (CNS) High School students and staff came together for a meaningful cause: supporting newly arrived students in our community. CNS French teacher Jessica Keane and Human Rights Club Advisor Jackie Hayman partnered to organize a school supply drive for InterFaith Works, an organization dedicated to helping refugees and immigrants transition successfully to life in Central New York.
Over the past year, Jessica and Jackie have collaborated on various initiatives with InterFaith Works, including donation drives and volunteer projects. When there is inclement or forecasted inclement weather, the decision to close school, delay opening or dismiss early is based on travel conditions and weather predictions to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
When schools are closed because of weather conditions or other emergencies, announcements are sent on ParentSquare and posted on the district website. Other emergency conditions, such as impending storms, may require students to be dismissed before regular school closing time. Early closing/dismissal announcements are also sent through ParentSquare and posted on the district website.
While emergency closings are also shared with local media, district communications are the first and best source of information.

NSCSD delivers Thanksgiving cheer with Meals on Wheels partnership:
On Tuesday, Nov. 19, the North Syracuse Central School District (NSCSD) made a “sweet” contribution to the North Area Meals on Wheels program hoping to enhance Thanksgiving meals for some special community members. John Rice, NSCSD’s Director of Science and CTE, delivered more than 40 homemade pumpkin pies to North Area Meals on Wheels.
District administrators joined forces to fund the initiative, each contributing $15 to support the effort. These funds were used to purchase supplies for more than 40 homemade pumpkin pies, which will accompany the Thanksgiving meals delivered to Meals on Wheels clients.

It is with profound sadness that the North Syracuse Central School District announces the passing of Dr. Jerome F. Melvin, former Superintendent of Schools and namesake of the District’s Administration Building. Dr. Melvin, whose career in education spanned decades, was a dedicated leader, advocate and visionary whose impact on the district and community is immeasurable.
Dr. Melvin first retired from his post as Superintendent on Aug. 30, 2000, only to return to the district in 2006 after serving in multiple interim superintendencies across the region. Congratulations to the Cicero-North Syracuse High School Class of 2025 Business and Marketing Honor Society inductees. The CNS Business and Marketing Honor Society is sponsored by the Business Teachers Association of New York State.
2025 is the 15th year CNS has participated in the honor society. Overall, 26 CNS students, all seniors, qualified for the honor society based on the following criteria: minimum GPA of 88 in Marketing/Business Courses; minimum GPA of 80 overall; completion of at least 2 credits of Business Courses prior to their junior year with plans to complete a third credit during senior year; proof of Character, Leadership, and Service provided in the form of a recommendation letter.

RRMS students' artwork featured at Syracuse Hancock International Airport:
Two students from Roxboro Road Middle School (RRMS), Ava Hardenburgh (7th grade) and Laila Perez (6th grade), will soon have their artwork on display at Syracuse Hancock International Airport for a full year. Their work is part of the SYR Community Art Program, where local artists’ creations are showcased for travelers.
The SYR Community Art Program, which launched in 2020, started as a way to connect the community through art and now features contributions from schools, libraries and other organizations. For three years, Onondaga County Public Libraries (OCPL) has been involved with the project. Various OCOL branches, including Salina Free Library, offer youth programs that encourage student involvement in the community project.

Throughout the North Syracuse Central School District, teachers, staff and students have come together to make a difference in the lives of those affected by recent hurricanes. In addition to individual teacher, staff and school building efforts, the North Syracuse Junior High School’s Community Builder’s Club and National Honor Society recently put together a district-wide donation drive to gather essential supplies. The Optimist Club of Cicero-North Syracuse is sponsoring an Essay Contest with a top award of a $2,500 college scholarship. Students in grades 9-12, under the age of 19 who live within the boundaries of the North Syracuse Central School District are eligible to participate. Entries for this year’s contest, “How Optimism has Paved my Road to Success,” are due by January 17, 2025.
Contest rules are as follows:
Each entry must have a title page containing: the official topic, number of words, writer’s name and address, phone number, name of school and birth date.

Board of Education passes resolution to increase tax exemption income limits for senior citizens:
Nov. 5, 2024 – At its regular meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, the North Syracuse Central School District Board of Education passed a resolution to increase income eligibility limits for senior residents who qualify for partial real property tax exemptions. This decision reflects the district’s commitment to supporting senior residents by making property tax relief more accessible to eligible seniors within the community.
Under the resolution, North Syracuse seniors 65 and older with limited incomes may now qualify for tax exemptions ranging from five to 50 percent, based on their income level. The income eligibility limits have been adjusted to account for increases in the cost of living, with the highest exemption of 50 percent available to seniors earning up to $39,000 ...
