Notification of Advanced Coursework

January 14, 2026: In accordance with New York State Education department requirements, all public school districts are required to provide annual notification to students and families regarding advanced coursework opportunities. This letter (sent to families on January 14) is intended to ensure that students and families understand the benefits of participating in advanced courses and are aware of the opportunities and supports available.

Advanced coursework at North Syracuse offers students the opportunity to engage in challenging and enriching academic  experiences. Participation in these courses can strengthen critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Our courses help to prepare students for college and career expectations. Courses allow students to explore academic interests in greater depth. They also improve readiness for postsecondary opportunities for college credit.

Our students can prepare for advanced coursework through strong academic performance, completion of prerequisite courses, and development of effective study habits. Placement decisions are typically based on multiple measures, which include academic records, teacher recommendations, assessments, student interest, and readiness. Families and students are encouraged to work closely with their child’s school counselor and teachers when planning course selections and determining appropriate placement for the following year.

The North Syracuse Central School District offers Honors, Accelerated, Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses at our middle schools, junior high and high school. Accelerated coursework at middle schools and junior high school:

To ensure equitable access to all of our families, financial assistance may be available to help reduce or eliminate costs that can be associated with advanced coursework (AP and some college courses). Families who may need financial support are encouraged to fill out the Free and Reduced Application.

We encourage all students and families to consider advanced coursework opportunities and to reach out with questions or for guidance. Our district is committed to providing equitable access and support so that all students can succeed. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact your child’s school counselor.
