School bus stop-arm cameras

October 16, 2025: Please click here or read the following for an important update from Onondaga County regarding the school bus safety program.

As you may be aware, Onondaga County, in partnership with Verra Mobility, recently instituted a bus camera safety program. This program issues tickets to drivers who pass a school bus when the stop-arm is extended.

Onondaga County has been made aware of concerns regarding violations issued in instances where a school bus was parked on or near school property. The County is actively working with Verra Mobility to implement system adjustments designed to prevent these events from being captured in the future.

Individuals who have received a violation that occurred on or near school property, or believe a notice was issued in error, may contact Verra Mobility at (408) 990-4819 to contest the violation or email SchoolBusSafety@ongov.net.

As with any new public safety initiative, unforeseen issues may arise. Onondaga County is committed to promptly identifying and correcting such issues to ensure the continued accuracy and integrity of the School Bus Safety Program.

We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as these improvements are made.
Sincerely, Onondaga County School Bus Safety Program

August, 2025: To reinforce our ongoing commitment to overall student safety, the North Syracuse Central School District is joining several other districts throughout NYS in utilizing school bus stop-arm cameras starting this fall. Approved and supported by county lawmakers and law enforcement, this pilot program is aimed at deterring drivers from illegally passing stopped school buses.

How The Program Works: Cameras activate when the bus stop-arm extends and red lights flash. When a vehicle passes a stopped bus with the stop arm extended, the camera captures images and videos. Potential violations are reviewed by law enforcement and, if verified, a ticket is issued to the vehicle owner by mail.

No cost to NSCSD: Cameras are managed by Verra Mobility in partnership with Onondaga County with no up-front costs to school districts or the county.

Fines for violations: 1st offense: $250 2nd offense (within 18 months): $275 3rd offense (within 18 months): $300
