CNS photography students place first and second in local photo contest

Mrs. Blaski’s Intermediate & Advanced Photography students recently participated in the 15th Annual Bousquet Holstein Photography Contest. The theme of this year’s contest was “Americana” and was based on the artworks of Frank Buffalo Hyde’s Everson Museum exhibit: Native Americana.

“‘Americana’ is broadly defined as anything associated with or characteristic of the culture, civilization, history, or geography of America. This year’s contest challenged student photographers to capture their personal definition of  “Americana,” through the juxtaposition of their own history, lived experience, and culture within the broader iconography of America” (Bousquet Holstein).

This year, nine area high schools participated in the photo contest and 132 entries were submitted. From these images, 14 judges selected the top 23 finasist images. Nine of the finalist images were created by CNS students. Amanda Johnson, grade 12, took home 2nd place for her image: “Midway” and Jennifer Draper, grade 11, took home the 1st place prize for her image: “Just A Memory” which is pictured to the left.

Other finalists included: Matthew Jordan (grade 12), Meghan McGrath (grade 12), Mia Sotoperez (grade 12), Darionna Sampson-Gilbert (grade 12) and Jennifer Draper for a second image.

This is the third time that a CNS Photography student has been awarded first place honors in this competition. In addition to the cash prize received by the winner of the contest, Bousquet Holstein makes a donation to the first place winner’s photography class. The first place winning entry is also featured on their Thanksgiving card, which is mailed to over 8,000 people.
