Empowering teachers: ENL workshop allows teachers to walk in students’ shoes

During the October 31 staff development portion of the school day, some teachers from CNS High School had the privilege of participating in a workshop facilitated by our ENL (English as a New Language) teachers, Ali Guiffrida and Lydia Roldan. The purpose of the training was to equip teachers with knowledge and strategies needed to support our English Language Learners (ELLs) across all subject areas effectively.

In today’s ever-changing educational landscape, it is critical that teachers are well-prepared to address the unique needs of ELLs. Ali Guiffrida and Lydia Roldan spearheaded this workshop to shed light on the NSCSD’s ENL program and share best practices for providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students. It was a day of exploration and discovery as our teachers delved into the world of ELL education.

Shannon Knapp, one of the district’s instructional technology coaches, was on hand to showcase the array of technical tools available to educators. Technology tools are invaluable in enhancing access to content for our ELLs. In an age where technology plays a pivotal role in education, this knowledge is instrumental in ensuring that every student has an equal opportunity to excel in their studies.

One of the most impactful moments of the workshop involved teachers experiencing what it's like to be in their students' shoes. They were presented with a text in a language they didn't understand, which served as a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by ELLs on a daily basis. This exercise fostered empathy and understanding among our educators, inspiring them to find innovative ways to support their students.

During the workshop, teachers demonstrated various strategies for helping ELLs access content effectively. These strategies included decoding unfamiliar language, using visual cues to aid comprehension, pre-teaching vocabulary, and scaffolding lessons to ensure that ELLs can grasp challenging concepts. By putting these techniques into practice, our teachers are better equipped to provide targeted support and guidance, fostering a more inclusive and empowering learning environment.

David Lunden, the NSCSD Director of Instructional Leadership, who oversees the ENL programs commented on the professional development opportunity. He said, “As we continue our mission of educating all students to the highest levels of academic achievement, this workshop serves as a step forward. It not only empowered our teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to support ELLs but also reinforced our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning community.”
