Music Teacher Maureen Alvaro honored at Gala for the Arts

NSCSD Music Teacher Maureen Alvaro was recognized at the CiTi Boces’ Central New York Gala for the Arts at the Everson Museum in downtown Syracuse on Wednesday, June 21. She was among those acknowledged for helping establish a district culture that celebrates the arts through innovation and creativity.

“Maureen stands out among her peers as a leader in the arts and has continuously been an advocate for her school, students, and community” said CiTi Boces Arts-in-Education representatives. Her colleagues describe her as an exceptional teacher and human being.

“Her students are so lucky to have her as a teacher. She continually seeks to learn and improve her craft and share that knowledge openly with the other music teachers. She is a quiet leader, doing the work and never seeking the spotlight. I’m so happy that her efforts are being acknowledged in the greater community” said Donna Marie Norton, Executive Director for Data, Accountability, and School Improvement.
Maureen brings a depth of experience to the North Syracuse Central School District. She earned her bachelors and masters in Music Education from Ithaca College, but her passion for music started much earlier.

“My primary instrument is the flute, which I have been playing since the third grade and continue to play. I loved being involved in all areas of music as a student. I went into teaching because I wanted to be able to share my love of music with my students” said Maureen.

She has been sharing that love of music for 25 years. The last 8 have been spent within our district. Maureen currently teaches music classes at Lakeshore Elementary and directs third and fourth grade chorus.

“I love making music with the students every day! I love watching them grow as musicians over the five years that they come into my classroom. They bring so much talent, creativity, and joy to the music room” said Maureen.

It’s easy to tell why Maureen was chosen to be honored at the gala. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication to teaching the arts within the North Syracuse Central School District.
