NSCSD takes first place in Middle School STEM Competition

Three North Syracuse Junior High School students were recently recognized for their standout STEM skills during a Board of Education meeting. Director of Math Nickolas Scholz presented Alyssa Bubniak and Liam Pierce-Joss with certificates for taking first place at the CNY Innovation Challenge. Elvis Culum was also a member of the team.

The CNY Innovation Challenge is a STEM focused competition that aims to spark ideas for developing unique products or services while fostering entrepreneurship. It was held during LeMoyne College’s Maker Faire back in April.

The eighth grade trio presented their version of an Everything Bag to a panel of judges. The over the shoulder bag features a multi-purpose charger, a cooling pack to keep your lunch fresh or ensure electronics don’t overheat, and a compartment for shoes.

Scholz says this is the second time the team has taken first place in the competition and they are looking forward to advancing to the high school division.

“We intentionally stayed around to watch the High School division. The students were amazed at the products and strategies the high schoolers presented. Although I believe they may have been slightly intimidated at the moment, they now know exactly what it will take to succeed next year. I believe they are ready for the challenge” said Advisor and retired NSCSD Math teacher Claudia Hertzberg.

Keep up the amazing work, we can’t wait to see what you do next!
