District Hosting Series of Public Meetings for School Budget Vote

The North Syracuse Central School District’s Board of Education has adopted a budget proposal for the 2023-2024 school year. This year, the District has been hosting a series of public budget meetings to make sure that community members have all the information they need prior to the May 16 budget vote/board of education member election.

The majority of meetings will be held  in person, but to encourage participation in the budget process, the District is also offering two online meetings for community members who may not be able to attend in person. The final meeting in the 2023 schedule is taking place tonight, Tuesday, May 9 at 4 PM. The meeting is being held at Lakeshore Road Elementary School (7180 Lakeshore Road) in Cicero.

NSCSD Associate Superintendent for Business Services Don Keegan said, “Historically, we have done approximately 30 budget presentations in our schools and around the community. Unfortunately, we have found that attendance at these presentations is low, especially by community members. We’re hoping that we can improve attendance by providing multiple opportunities for staff and community members to attend presentations together in our buildings.”

In addition to the budget and typical vehicle bonding propositions, there are several proposals on this year’s ballot. The District is asking voters to authorize both the addition of a student (Ex-Officio non-voting) Board Member and a change to our typical polling location from Cicero Elementary School to Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

“We have been looking into changing the polling location at Cicero Elementary School for several years and we are glad to finally have that option on the ballot,” Keegan said. “Additionally, we believe that having a student voice on our Board of Education will bring new perspectives and are excited about the potential.”
