NSCSD Elementary Students Learn From Gizmo

The North Syracuse Central School District’s team of mental health professionals has a new tool in their toolbox thanks to a donation from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The AFSP has donated 10 books, Gizmo’s Pawesome Guide to Mental Health, to our district so that each elementary school, along with the North Syracuse Early Education Program, now has a copy of the book.

The book is named for Gizmo who is a therapy dog with a mission of helping kids recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Gizmo’s book is part of an effort to create a curriculum for kids’ mental health programs in school.

NSCSD counselors will be using the books to provide read-a-longs with students so they can learn about the feelings of mad, sad and worried and what they can do to help them feel better and who they can talk to in and out of school.

If you have a young student in the District and would like to learn more about Gizmo’s work with our students, please visit their website at https://www.gizmo4mentalhealth.org/.
