Several Teams of C-NS Students Participate in "Out of the Darkness" Walk

On Saturday, October 9, a number of high school students created teams and participated in the Syracuse Out of the Darkness Walk to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Three of those students, Genevieve Costigan, Maddy Gessini, and Emma Miller, work hard all year on the walk committee to plan and implement it each year. These students all became involved after losing a friend or struggling through their own mental health issues.

Genevieve Costigan started a team for CNS Chorus and had more than 15 members participate including chorus director, Danielle Rausa and orchestra director John Harnois. These students sang along to music played by our DJ and 4 D productions and entertained many while there. They have worked hard to be heard at CNS and create change related to mental health awareness.

Emma Miller created and worked hard for the Caring for Carson team raising over $4,000 after hosting a Motorcycle ride event in August. She works with the Mattydale Fire Department as well and is vocal about encouraging others to seek help when needed.
Maddy Gessini worked hard on Team Freebirds to raise awareness and funds after having her own personal struggle with mental health. Over the past two years, she has shared her struggles with teachers and peers and is now sharing publicly to hopefully encourage others to seek help and give hope. She was interviewed at the Out of the Darkness Walk. The Out of the Darkness Walk has already raised more than $142,000 and will continue to raise money until 12/31. The money raised will stay local and provide educational materials and programs to schools and businesses in our community as well as support those who have had a loss to suicide.  If you would like to donate to help the efforts of these students, you  may do so here:
