Assessments News - September

Welcome back!!  Are you ready for the new 2016-2017 school year?
Each grade level is responsible to complete 3 units this year.  You will find the "Bill of Rights" for writing linked as well as the pacing guide for your grade level. Our students deserve the best writing instruction possible, so this is a reminder of the things we need to do for our students every day.
  Assessment information for all grades:

Each grade level will administer an on-demand pre-assessment and post assessment at the beginning and end of every unit, respectively.  The pre-assessment for UNIT 1 should be given in the month of September, to be completed by October 3rd.  You can read more about the on-demand writing assessments in the Writing Pathways Manual (Opinion pg. 86, Information pg. 128, and Narrative pg. 182).  This assessment can be used to assess stamina, volume, structure, elaboration, along with other key writing components.  In some grade levels, the students are asked to revisit this assessment to help them see their improvements and set new goals.

You can locate the on-demand prompts at the beginning of the unit, or in the Writing Pathways book.   Click here for powerpoint with writing prompts for on-demand assessments.

Please read and display the prompt to students exactly as is in the book EXCEPT for the time limit. The time limit should be based upon your observation - so, if your students sit for 5 minutes or 40, that is your decision.  The most important part of this is that we are all consistent.

CAUTION:   K-2 has a slightly different wording to their prompt.

OPINION and INFORMATION prompts have special directions to give the night before.

Do not panic if the children are confused, do little, etc. - that is what you want to see. You want to see where to begin your instruction.  You want to use this time to write down the names of those that seemed to need help getting started, had a lot to write, little stamina, focused and ready to go...

After this is completed, you will add this to the new assessment folder (please read about in another email to follow).

The First unit pre-assessment needs to be completed by October 3.

Thanks, Dawn
