On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, the voters of the North Syracuse Central School District will be asked to vote on the following Bus Proposition: To purchase ten (10) 65-passenger diesel school buses at an estimated maximum cost of $105,690 each; one (1) 39-passenger diesel school bus with one to three wheelchair positions and air conditioning at an estimated maximum cost of $118,071; and one (1) 48-passenger bus with air conditioning at an estimated maximum cost of $105,487 for a total estimated maximum cost of all such vehicles not to exceed $1,280,458, with the funds to be obtained through a levy of a tax upon the taxable property of the School District to be collected in annual installments.
How will it benefit the community to approve this bus proposition?
The District will actually save taxpayer dollars by purchasing new buses.
Explanation: The District has 12 buses that are 12 years old with approximately 112,000 to 183,000 miles of usage. Four (4) of those buses will not pass the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) inspection for the 2011- 2012 school year. The cost to repair the 12 buses is $84,900 (parts and repair expenses before Transportation Aid) while the annual cost of the bus proposition is $18,029. The yearly savings to taxpayers by approving the bus proposition is $66,871. If new buses are purchased, the District and taxpayers will realize additional savings by not having to replace a retiring mechanic. The elimination of this position will save an additional $80,507.
The Bus Proposition Vote will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM.
