For many years the North Syracuse Central School District shared information with parents about registered sex offenders living in the district when we received such information from law enforcement agencies. In the fall of 2011, however, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office notified us that they would no longer routinely e-mail this type of information to the district. In light of this development, coupled with the fact that information about registered sex offenders is now readily available in other places the district no longer has a policy pertaining to registered sex offenders.
The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) now offers an alert system regarding Level 2 & 3 registered sex offenders. The system allows users to sign up to receive free alerts via e-mail, text message or fax whenever a Level 2 or Level 3 sex offender listed on the DCJS website moves into or out of a community or location of interest. To register with NY-Alert, go to: www.criminaljustice.ny.gov/nsor. The website instructs users on how to register. Once registered for NY-Alert, users will be notified immediately of offenders moving into or out of areas you select.
Information regarding Level 1, 2 & 3 offenders can also be obtained by calling the NYS Sex Offender Registry at 1-800-262-3257.
