Sex Offender Registry

The Board of Education of the North Syracuse Central School District acknowledges the efforts of local law enforcement to notify the district when a person with a history of sex offenses against a child is being paroled or released into the community, in accordance with the provisions of the Sex Offender Registration act, commonly known as Megan’s Law. The purpose of this notification is to protect members of the community, particularly children, by providing appropriate notice of the presence of individuals who may present a danger. Consistent with its duty to protect students under its care, the district shall cooperate with local law enforcement agencies in this endeavor.

The New York State Committee on Open Government, the entity responsible for providing guidance regarding compliance with the state’s Freedom of Information Law, has issued an opinion that public access to information received by a school district pursuant to the provisions of Megan’s Law is not governed by the Freedom of Information Law, but is instead governed by the provisions of Megan’s Law. Megan’s Law, in turn, explicitly authorizes any entity receiving information from law enforcement about registered sex offenders to disclose or further disseminate such information, at its discretion.

Pursuant to this discretion, when the District receives information from law enforcement authorities about registered sex offenders, the Superintendent or Superintendent’s designee(s) shall determine whether to disclose or further disseminate such information to the general public, by posting all or part of such information on the District’s website.  Residents of the school community are encouraged, to the greatest extent possible, to access this information via the District’s website.

In addition, information about level two and level three sex offenders, generally, regardless of whether they are living in or near our school community, may be obtained from the New York State Division for Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) website at: http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/nsor. Residents of the school community who do not have website access at home, are encouraged to obtain this information by utilizing publicly available computer terminals at local libraries.

On this page, the District will post letters and information it receives from local law enforcement officials informing us that a sexual offender has moved within District boundaries. We also will include a link to the New York State Sex Offender Registry. This page will be updated when new information is provided to the District.
