The Northstar Winterguard varsity guard is the oldest continuous run winter guard program in New York State. The Mid-York Colorguard circuit was created in 1965. The North Syracuse High School district team joined the next year, 1966, and had so much interest that two guards were formed, the Northmen under director Bernie Daley and the Northern Intrepid coached by Jim Balocook. Of note, there was also an independent guard called the Militaires from North Syracuse which was an all boy guard captained by Dave LeBlanc future director of the Northmen. The Northmen were a national power in the 1970s’, winning the first WGI regional ever. They went on to place highly in several national WGI competitions.
Over the years the program has evolved continuing to the present competing now as the Northstars. The 2010 competition season will be the Northstar winterguard’s 44th year of competition.
As stated above, the 2009 Northstars Varsity guard finished undefeated as the Gold Medalist at the Northeast Color Guard Circuit Championships and the Gold Medalist at the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit Championships and won the national championship in Scholastic A Class.
The Northstars JV Guard finished a very successful season by placing as the Gold Medalist at both the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit and Northeast Color Guard Circuit championships.
The Northstars Cadet Guard was also successful in 2009 finishing as the Gold Medalist at the Mid-York Color Guard Circuit Championships.
The Varsity, JV and Cadet Northstar Guards congratulate the "Future Northstars" Color Guard Club and the Bear Road Elementary School Color Guard Club on their outstanding performances at the last Spring’s Festival of the Arts.
